Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility
In this standard, teachers are charged with the task of teachings students how to properly and appropriately use technology.
Teachers should go over copyright rules to be sure that students understand that they cannot use just anything they find on the internet in presentations or papers. There are laws in place for a reason, and it is important for teacher to explain the reasoning behind those laws so the students have an understanding of what is expected of them when it comes to using other people's works. It would be beneficial for a teacher to introduce the Creative Commons.
Teachers also need to teach responsibilty when it comes to innapropriate material that students might come across on the internet. Students should be taught what to do when the come across such things, but also have an understanding of what is appropriate and what it not. While others might disagree with me on this point, I do think that there should be blocks on certain sites. Yes, these might hinder some searches, but I do not think that students have the discretion or self-control to always do the right thing, and I believe that teachers should help them out in these scenarios by having restrictions in place.
